Yoga at Thrive

Yoga philosophy originated in India over 3000 years ago and originally intended to unite body and mind through meditation. Today, yoga has branched out into many modern forms, emphasizing physical postures, movement, conscious breathing, and relaxation.

Thrive opts for authentic yoga where attention is paid to these aspects in every lesson, but where meditation and yoga philosophy also play an important role. The classes are active and strenuous, at the same time deeply relaxing and accessible to all levels. Each class is a unique experience and is guided by a weekly anatomical focus and a monthly theme from the yoga philosophy. In the yoga classes we work in small groups, so that there is a lot of room for personal attention for everyone's experience and areas of interest.

Yoga Styles

Which yoga style suits you best at the moment? Below you will find more information about the specific yoga styles Thrive offers.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is a flowing, dynamic form of yoga in which different postures alternate to the rhythm of the breath. The constant focus on breath and movement brings your attention to the here and now. Recurring elements from the sun salutation are used as a connection between the postures. The emphasis is on increasing (inner) strength, concentration and endurance. A Vinyasa Yoga class has fixed parts. A warming up with sun salutations, standing and ground postures, meditation and a final relaxation.

Yin Yoga

The Yin Yoga classes at Thrive are based on the teaching method of Paul Grilley. This yoga form is relaxing and healing. In deep physical stretches, especially ground poses, the muscles remain relaxed to reach the fascia layers of the body. The postures are held for a longer period of time (3-7 minutes) so that the connective tissue and the joints become flexible (again). If you don't feel like an active flow or if you are rehabilitating, for example, Yin Yoga is a good choice.

Yin Yang Yoga

Yang is everything that is dynamic. Ever changing, visible, warm and strong. Yin is all that is static. Silent, hidden, cold and soft. One does not exist without the other. In our Yin Yang classes we combine the powerful physical aspect of Vinyasa Yoga with the stillness of Yin Yoga. The class can start with calm Yin poses and then become more active or start with Yang Sun Salutations and end with soothing Yin Yoga poses. It results in a nice balance between Yin and Yang.

Hatha Yoga (aroma therapy)

Hatha Yoga is a calm, classical form of yoga. While we are in the poses for a longer period of time, the yoga teacher shares clues about physical aspects of the poses and insights from yoga philosophy. Hatha Yoga focuses on alignment and awareness. Hatha Yoga is the starting point to discover and develop yoga postures. At Thrive Yoga you can also opt for Hatha Aroma Therapy. A special lesson in which the vitality of essential oils is added to the practice. Surrounded by wonderful scents of herbs and flowers, you can completely relax. These classes are generally a little softer than the regular Hatha classes.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra literally means 'sleep of the yogis'. An accessible class to completely relax physically, mentally and emotionally. In Yoga Nidra we rest in a state between sleeping and waking. Savasana is the only pose we adopt during a Yoga Nidra class. Yoga Nidra has a deep relaxing effect on body and mind. It has the same effect as 3 to 4 hours of sleep. You do not need any experience with Yoga for this class.

Aerial Yoga

At our yoga studio in Zeeburg you can also opt for Aerial Yoga. Yoga in the air. This yoga form is a fusion of aerial acrobatics and Hatha Yoga. A long loop of special cloth hanging from the ceiling supports you during standing yoga poses, balance, forward bends and hip openers. Fear of “inversions” (eg head and handstand) can be overcome with the help of the canvas. Strength from your “core”, flexibility, alignment and balance are further developed. More information about this unique yoga form find you here.

Other Vinyasa Yoga Styles

A special Vinyasa form on the Thrive Yoga class schedule is ' Jivamukti Yoga'. This yoga form offers a powerful flow. Jivamukti originated in New York and was developed by Sharon Gannon and David Life. The classes are especially suitable if you have already gained some experience with (vinyasa) yoga and are interested in a physically strenuous class with ample attention to the philosophy of yoga. More information about this yoga form find you here.

In addition, you will findVinyasa Gentle Flowclasses on the schedule. The pace is lower than a regular Vinyasa Yoga class and there is more attention to details. This makes it a suitable form for beginners in Vinyasa Yoga and if you fancy gentler movement at a slower pace.

Levels

The yoga classes at Thrive Yoga are accessible for all levels, unless stated otherwise. Remember that the Vinyasa and Jivamukti yoga classes are tough when you are just starting out with Yoga due to the pace of successive poses.

We recommend Hatha Yoga, Yin Yoga or Gentle Flow Vinyasa as your first yoga class. Always let the yoga teacher know you are new. Then we keep an extra eye on things. Our yoga teachers adjust the yoga classes to the composition of the group. Do you have questions? Call or email feel free to contact us for personal advice. Do you have suggestions on how we can improve our Yoga offering? Let us know!

Yoga teachers

Thrive works with more than fifty committed and experienced yoga and Pilates teachers. All our teachers have an accredited training and several years of experience in teaching. Together they form the core of Thrive Yoga and they love to share their passion for yoga or pilates.
